Definition of Online vs. Blended Courses

You need to ask:  Where is the Learner & Instructor?

  • Same Time/ Same Place: Whether synchronous or asynchronous:  face-to-face (F2F) or online

  • Same Time/ Different Place: Synchronous online

  • Different Time/ Different Place:  Asynchronous online

Fully Online Course
All instruction occurs in online environment, synchronously or asynchronously, or both.  No face-to-face (F2F) meetings are required for the course. Instructor provides all materials, course activities, assignments, and discussions in an online environment.  If a student orientation is needed, for training with technology, this must occur in a synchronous or asynchronous online environment.

Hybrid (Blended) Course
Instruction is required in both face-to-face (F2F) and in an online environment.  There must be required F2F and class meetings. For student accessibility, most materials, course activities, assignments, and discussions must be available in an online environment.

Please Note: Posting resources & syllabus (only) are not considered online or hybrid (blended) courses.
