In 1819, Thomas Jefferson founded a university upon principles as new and revolutionary as the young American nation he helped shape. In that era, most colleges trained clergymen and scholars. Jefferson designed his University of Virginia to educate the citizenry and especially its leaders, offering a broader and more practical range of study than any other university at the time.

School of Continuing and Professional Studies Today

Today, almost 15,000 adults annually expand their horizons through degree, professional development, personal enrichment, and travel programs offered through the University of Virginia's School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS).  By building on the legacy of the founder, the University of Virginia continues to play a key role in shaping the future of the nation and the world.

With a network of seven academic centers throughout the commonwealth, the School serves adult students, school districts, federal  and local government agencies, and the business community. 

Through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, students earn undergraduate and graduate degrees, certificates, and professional relicensure.  With a robust travel and learn program, professional development certificate programs, and a rich distance learning portfolio, SCPS opens the doors of the University to a diverse range of adult students.

The University of Virginia is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
