Become a Peer Mentor
In order to become a Peer Mentor a BIS student must:
- Be in good standing in the BIS program;
- Have successfully completed either 3 semesters or 18 hours in the
program;
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in the program.
Responsibilities: Peer Mentors commit for a full academic year.
Each Peer Mentor is assigned up to three students per year (e.g., three students
in the fall; two students in the fall and one student in the spring).
Mentors meet with students at the beginning of each semester and are available
via e-mail at other times. In addition, Peer Mentors are required to:
- Participate in a Peer Mentor Orientation Session prior to
new student orientation;
- After an initial meeting, be available to their mentees either via
email or in person to answer questions and discuss relevant issues;
- Be available to meet with and advise new students during new student
orientation and participate in other peer mentor activities at orientation;
- Attend discussion and feedback sessions each semester.
A Peer Mentor should be prepared to devote about 30 hours to the program over
the course of the academic year.
