University Human Resources provides an Education Benefits Program that went into effect July 1, 2008.  A core component of the program is tuition benefits, designed to provide Employees and their Schools and Departments with centrally-provided financial support for employee educational, vocational and professional development opportunities, in accordance with State policy.  Full and part-time Academic Division employees, including classified and university staff and faculty, with one year of benefits-eligible service, can request up to $2000 per calendar year in tuition benefits for eligible courses.

Employees choosing to enroll as a part-time non-degree seeking student in the regular On Grounds credit courses of the University of Virginia* will do so through the Community Scholar Program.  Please follow the How to Enroll instructions. You will also need to Request permission from University Human Resources using the  Education Benefits and Enrollment Form (at UHR link below.)  .  See sidebar on left for further details on semester tuition and calendar, administrative policies, and grade and enrollment changes.  It is recommended that you receive permission from the instructor to take the course before requesting your Educational Benefits through UHR.

For more information on the Education Benefits Program, please visit the UHR Benefits website.

Please note:

  • Schools and Departments may provide additional, departmentally-funded financial support for employee education, vocational and professional development, in accordance with State policy, by providing a PTAO and appropriate signature on the Education Benefits Enrollment Form.
  • Course and Credit Limits:  Community Scholars may take up to two classes each semester.  University employees must not exceed 7 undergraduate credits or 6 graduate credits.

*Community Scholars cannot enroll in School of Law or Medicine courses.  The Curry School of Education does offer courses to employees/community members.  Registration is handled directly by the Curry School.  For information, contact the Curry School’s Office of Admissions, 434-924-3334, 104 Ruffner Hall.
