Introduction to Public Relations

Course Description: This course is designed to give students an introduction to the elements of the practice of public relations. It will be particularly useful for public relations professionals in the early stages of their careers and for individuals who do not currently practice public relations full time but are interested in the profession. The course will address the history of public relations, examine how public relations is practiced today, review key elements of the public relations process and introduce relevant ethical and legal issues. The material will be covered in seven class meetings and will cover the following topics. -The development of public relations in the US. -The theoretical basis of public relations and the roles and activities of public relations professionals. -Review of ethical codes and issues, and an introduction to legal aspects of public relations. -Overview of communication theories and of research used in planning and evaluating a public relations program. -Using a four-step process, students will be introduced to an effective planning model that includes goals, objectives, strategies and tactics. -Guidelines for working with the media, doing effective interviews, media training, and responding to inquiries. -The strategies and tactics of public relations. Review of tactics of effective campaigns.
