Master of Education, Reading Education
The University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education offers a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in reading. As well as meeting the needs of teachers and other educators for a firm foundation in reading education, this program also meets the requirements for endorsement as a reading specialist
Students enrolled in this program will acquire a current and comprehensive understanding of literacy development from emergent literacy to mature reading. Reading courses focus on literacy acquisition, early intervention, reading comprehension, assessment, reading disability, and word knowledge. ESL issues are addressed. Other courses include work in literature, writing, and psychology.
Thirty-six semester hours, including practicum, are required. This is an ongoing program that takes approximately two to three years to complete on a part-time basis
Please note that the acceptance of all courses in degree programs is subject to the approval of your advisor
Note: All reading courses are supported by state-of-the-art video demonstrations of teaching activities and practicum assignments.
