University and Program Resources

U.Va. is distinctive among institutions of higher education. Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University sustains the ideal of developing, through education, leaders who are well-prepared to help shape the future of the nation. The University is public, while nourished by the strong support of its alumni.  It is also selective; the students who come here have been chosen because they show the exceptional promise Jefferson envisioned.

The University of Virginia Health System is a nationally renowned academic medical center committed to providing outstanding patient care, educating tomorrow's health care leaders, and discovering new and better ways to treat diseases.  The medical center is an integrated network of primary and specialty care, offering services ranging from wellness programs and routine checkups to the most technologically advanced care.  The Health System includes the 542-bed hospital and numerous clinics on the Grounds, as well as a number of practices throughout Charlottesville and its neighboring counties.

The College of Arts and Sciences is home to the departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.  The Department of Biology offers a diversified program that serves students with a breadth of interests and provides an education that ultimately enables them to pursue careers in many areas of the biological sciences, including medicine.  The Department of Chemistry offers outstanding physical facilities and a close-knit community of scholars–an environment which demonstrates that chemistry is far more than the study of matter and its interactions.  The Department of Physics teaches students to push back the boundaries of knowledge in this most fundamental of the natural sciences. Courses provide training in the concepts and methods of science for application in medicine and many professional areas.

Students in the Post-Bac Pre-Med Program will have the opportunity to avail themselves of the incredible resources of the University of Virginia, one of the nation’s finest institutions of higher education.  Renowned faculty, outstanding instruction and student services, and relevant volunteer and internship opportunities are the hallmark of this program.
