Student Life & Housing

The University's 12,700 undergraduate students come from every state and more than 90 nations. Almost every imaginable background is represented in this academically distinguished group.

Students thrive here, in and outside of the classroom.  The atmosphere on Grounds is active and filled with a cooperative spirit.  Jefferson's vision of the University as an academical village - a community where students and professors would work closely together to expand the boundaries of human understanding - is very much a reality.  The more than 2,000 faculty at the University are easily accessible to students. Students can even take their professors out to lunch (for free).  The nature of academics at the University was determined by Jefferson's plan to have students and faculty living and learning together.  This relationship is still very much at the heart of our academic and extracurricular programs.

The University of Virginia combines the scenic natural beauty of the Blue Ridge with a burgeoning, cosmopolitan, mid-sized city.

Students agree that Charlottesville is somewhere in-between a large city and a small town.  Off-Grounds, students can find shopping, coffee shops, bookstores, churches, restaurants, art galleries, movie theatres, concert venues, and even gourmet gas stations. Add to this an active student life environment with over 500 student organizations, weekly speakers, conferences, performances, and athletics.  On-Grounds activities are abundant and integral to the students’ interests and the overall U.Va. experience.

Jefferson founded UVA to empower individuals to act.  Our current students are actively developing this community in ways that result in individual growth, as well as in the development of relationships and a sense of community that lasts well beyond the U.Va. years.
